"We're standing in the middle of the largest humanitarian crisis of our time. More than 100 million people – 1 in every 100 people in the world – have been forced from their homes. Half of them are children. Those fleeing war, climate change, and extreme poverty across the African continent make up the largest percentage of our world's refugees... Why haven't you seen their story in the news?"
THE BURNING promises to bring the untold story of Africa's refugee crisis to the world.
9,000 miles. 3 families. 1 chance to escape.
“Hrig,” the Arabic term for “illegal immigration,” translates to “burning.” It signifies a migrant’s decision to burn their papers, in order to avoid identification and repatriation on their long journeys to safer shores. But it also signifies their decision to burn their past lives, sacrificing themselves in hopes of reaching a future on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea.
Over the past decade, the European Union has been working in direct violation of international law to transform North African states into brutal holding cells for the millions of men, women, and children who flee violent conflict and extreme poverty across the African continent every year. But the human cost of the EU’s illicit policies has been hidden from view. Now, for the first time, THE BURNING will bring the untold story of Africa’s refugee crisis to life through the incredible journeys of three families that begin thousands of miles apart and intersect as they move closer to the promise of safety on European shores.
Over the past three years, Dr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani has journeyed over 9,000 miles with these three courageous families. Embedded in smuggling rings and hidden migrant brotherhoods, they have traveled across deserts and through war-torn cities to reach Libya, Algeria, and Morocco—home to the only European land border on the African continent. Together, the journeys of one young family fleeing extreme poverty and encroaching jihadist groups in Mali, one brotherhood of orphaned boys seeking to escape a future as child soldiers and save the younger siblings they left behind in West Africa, and one desperate father putting his life on the line to reunite with his wife and daughter who remain trapped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo invite audiences inside of the crisis like never before...
With your continued support, we'll invite audiences around the world to step inside of the crisis unfolding on the other side of Europe’s borders. We hope you'll consider making a tax-deductible donation to our final round of fundraising, sharing our links with your friends, or hosting an exclusive early screening of THE BURNING in your community. Thank you for joining us in telling the untold story of Africa's migrant and refugee crisis and fighting for the basic human rights of those who have been forgotten!

LEARN MORE ABOUT SMALL WORLD FILMS
SMALL WORLD FILMS is a non-profit production studio focused on social impact storytelling. We believe in the power of stories to raise individual awareness, incite community action, and create positive and sustainable global change.
Here at SMALL WORLD FILMS, we produce independent documentary films and design interactive social impact campaigns about our world's most critical humanitarian issues. Some of our recent projects have brought global attention to how a repeal of the DACA policy would affect 800,000 young immigrants in the U.S. and how communities in West Africa are coping with the most devastating series of natural disasters to strike their region in the past century. We tackle issues big and small, at home and abroad, and partner with top production experts to support storytellers from their earliest drafting phase to their final product.
If you're interested in learning more about how we can help you tell your story or design a social impact campaign around a film you've already created, please send us a message at [email protected] and we'll get back to you shortly.
